Senior Backend Engineer - Internal Tools

It’s probably uncommon that you read a job ad that starts with a story. So, grab a huge cup of your favourite warm beverage and let’s jump in. Now, imagine you just downloaded the Pleo app. You start using it. Uh, oh. You hit a little snag. Your card isn’t working for some reason. (Yes, though we work very hard to ensure this never happens, we’d be lying if we said it didn’t.) So, you reach out to our customer team to figure out how to fix it. This is a key moment. Depending on how this goes, not only affects the stories you’re going to tell your friends later that day, it affects how you’ll feel about using Pleo, and if you’ll stay a happy customer.

Behind every great product is a team of talented people who care about empowering others to seamlessly use the product and quickly resolve issues when they arise. These operations teams, as we call them at Pleo, need great tools! That’s where you come in.

As one of our engineers building internal tools, you’ll get to work alongside internal teams to both help us deliver great customer interactions and use technology to push what’s possible in how we care for our customers. With that, you’ll also help us build top notch tech to meet regulatory requirements! (Are we allowed to be excited about that? Might be dry. But we think it’s kind of cool, too.) We’re looking for an engineer that wants to be close with the people who use what they build and who wants to join a team of dedicated and caring engineers that are focused on helping us build an efficient, but most importantly human, customer experience.

We’re not a leader of customer satisfaction in our space by accident. We’re constantly on the lookout for how we can utilize technology to improve what’s possible in how we deliver our product and deliver for our customers. By joining this team, you’ll get to help us push what’s possible, and more than likely, help bring a few smiles to the faces of people who hit a snag during their time using Pleo.

  • Testing frameworks (Cypress, JUnit, Testcontainers) and principles,
  • Observability and monitoring (Datadog).

Your colleagues would say you:

  • Are a great communicator
  • Don’t just write code; you are a key player when designing the overall solution

Why join us?

Working at Pleo means you're working on something very exciting: the future of work. Our mission is to help every company go beyond the books. Pleo itself means ‘more than you’d expect’, and it’s been the secret to our success over the last 8 years. So it’s only fitting that we’d pass this philosophy onto our customers to help them make the most of their finances.

We think company spending should be delegated to all employees and teams, that it should be as automated as possible, and that it should drive a culture of responsible spending. Finance teams shouldn’t be siloed from the rest of the organisation – they should work in unity with marketing, sales, IT and everyone else.

Speaking of working in unity, our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo. We have four core values, the first of which is ‘champion the customer’, which means we address real pain points that businesses face. Next up is ‘succeed as a team’, which highlights how our strength lies in our diversity and trust in each other. We also ‘make it happen’ by taking bold decisions and following through to deliver results. Last but not least, we ‘build to scale’, creating lasting solutions that address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s needs.

So, in a nutshell, that's Pleo. Today we are a 850+ team, from over 100 nations, sitting in our Copenhagen HQ, London, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Montreal and Lisbon offices —and quite a few full-time remotes in 35 other countries! Being HQ'd out of Copenhagen means we're inspired by things like a good work-life balance. If you don't work in the office with us, we'll help you set up the best remote setup possible and make sure you still have time to connect with your team.
