The Role

At Pleo, our Senior Engineers play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence within teams. What does that mean? While working closely within the AI Enablement team, you’ll spend a good portion of your time coding and hands-on problem-solving, helping to sprinkle intelligence (through Large Language Models, Machine Learning, etc.) to improve features and products across the Pleo platform. You will build technology that enables other product teams in the company to apply large language models to their problem spaces to better serve our customers.

As a Senior Engineer, you will also contribute by taking ownership of key projects and components, mentoring junior engineers, and fostering a culture of collaboration. You’ll have a significant role in improving the scalability, performance, and robustness of our platform, and will collaborate closely with product teams to deliver impactful solutions.

What you’ll be doing

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable AI-powered products and features. There is product engineering at the heart of this. You’ll join customer calls, ideate on customer problems, come up with solutions, build and ship this to customers, and learn and iterate.
  • Work closely with other product and data teams to integrate AI capabilities into our platform.
  • Build and optimize robust data pipelines to support AI-driven features.
  • Develop and improve the scalability, performance, and reliability of our back-end infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define, architect, and build new customer-facing features.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical roadmap planning.
  • Ensure seamless integration between back-end and front-end systems and other components of the platform.

What you bring

  • 5+ years of experience building software in a product team.
  • Solid experience with front-end technologies and their interaction with back-end systems (React, JavaScript/TypeScript preferred but not required).
  • Experience in back-end technologies such as Node.js, Java, or Kotlin.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Experience with distributed systems and micro-services architecture.
  • Interest or experience in AI: Application of LLMs, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, prompting, and machine learning.

Who you’ll be working with and reporting to

You’ll report to our Engineering Manager and work closely with teams in Spend Decisions. Our team of six is highly collaborative and dedicated to building AI-powered features starting with using LLMs to catch expenses that are out-of-policy. You’ll also have the chance to partner with teams across Spend Insights, Platform AI, Users & Controls, etc. to ensure success.

How you’ll develop in this role

In your first three months at Pleo, you’ll:

  • Lead one of the many features we have planned for the AI powered out-of-policy checks for expenses and in so doing reduce the time it takes to review and bookkeep.
  • Collaborate with the many teams across Spend Decisions and Spend Insight to improve our automation offerings with AI.
  • Grow your skills in AI product engineering and feature delivery, taking on new challenges as the company continues to scale.

Salary Range

The annual salary for this position varies based on your location:

  • United Kingdom: £80,400 - £85,500
  • Spain/Portugal: 87,100€ - 92,500€
